Arts and culture are your passion, whether you listen mainly to house music or prefer to spend hours walking around a museum. A career behind the scenes of this multifaceted sector is your ambition.
In this programme, you will learn the social significance of art and culture. You will develop a broad vision of art with a capital A, but also of popular culture. You will analyse the domain of the Visual Arts, the film industry, the music industry, the publishing business, the performing arts and the world of mass media.
You will examine how the world of art and culture functions. In addition, you will get to know the parties involved in the creation, distribution and consumption of culture. You will practice writing articles and will learn the intricacies of social scientific research.
A combination of Business, Sociology, History and Media Science prepares you to deal with the challenges for which the art world is known, from different perspectives.
Programme content
In the first year you gain a thorough grounding in the world of art, culture and media. What are the central theoretical concepts with which culture scientists work? What historical, sociological and economic aspects are important for art and culture? And how are they related?
In the second and third year, you build on your basic knowledge and choose a major which contains a number specialisation modules. You design your own study package from three areas of specialisation:
Culture and Economics: you become familiar with the economic and business side of culture
Culture and Sociology: you examine networks within the art world and the relationship between creators and audience
Culture and Media: the establishment, circulation and consumption of media and media products are central.
In your third year you have the option to spend a study period abroad, or to take a minor in another field of study at Erasmus University
